After more than a decade of indie-electronica curation, Crooked Colours brings a fresh wave of selects with their fourth studio album, Dirt Road Gold .

Crooked Colours have spent their career shaping the indie-dance space with timeless soundscapes interlaced with unique, electronic flair. Once a dynamic trio, this Australian-bred project has taken on a new shape, with Phillip Slabber leading the project forward solo and in a fresh direction. After a quiet few years, Slabber is finally bringing Crooked Colours back to life with the project's long-awaited fourth studio album, Dirt Road Gold .

Building on the legacy that was Tomorrows , Dirt Road Gold steps into a new kind of vulnerability, highlighting the massive changes that have taken place for Crooked Colours. Slabber uses uncertainty as fuel, expanding the edges of their dreamy, familiar production into something more fluid. This 12-track project explores love, longing, and nostalgia through a new lens, offering listeners the melodic warmth and familiarity of their original sound with more depth than ever before.

The vision for this album was to create something that feels honest to where I’m at right now, but still connected to the DNA of Crooked Colours. It’s not about reinventing everything – it’s about evolving it. Letting it breathe, letting it grow. At its core, this record is about change – and learning to be okay with it.

Phillip Slabber

The vulnerability behind Dirt Road Gold carries listeners on an expansive journey of rediscovery. There is an intricate balance that glistens off each note: the tension between holding on and letting go. There is a looseness to the record that feels like Slabber is rediscovering Crooked Colours in real time, and while the album pushes for subtle change, it still feels like home to me.

The album opens with " Oxford ," a track that oozes with the tension of both uncertainty and contentment. Slabber’s haunting vocals whisper over atmospheric synths with the notion that “this might be as good as it will get.” The " Pressure " builds as the next track leans into the past, with the piano riffs and electronic roots that feel familiar to Crooked Colours' origins.

Then, " Come Thru " comes sweeping in with new life, as the undercurrent of emotional lyrics guides listeners into a drop that vibrates with colors of the underworld. It brings on the feelings of duality, of both light and shadow, that make it one of my favorites on the album. " I Can't Forget You " comes in at a close second. As one of the previously released singles leading up to the album release, this track set my heart ablaze from the moment I heard it, with its ethereal melody coupled with Slabber's sensual, notorious voice that became the song of my summer.

Other standouts include tracks like " Do Me Like That ," which features rising Australian vocalist Luna and gives off a subtle UK Garage, '90s electronica vibe that feels fresh for Crooked Colours. Like Dusky meets Fred again.., it gives Dirt Road Gold an edge that stands out amongst other albums. Meanwhile, the title track brings a surprising twang to the party that will leave you pleasantly surprised by the experimentation.

The inspiration was apparently as spontaneous as the result sounds: “What happens when your buddy dares you to write a house-inspired country song? ‘Dirt Road Gold,’ that’s what happens.”
